History

Archeological excavations shows, that in the ninth to twelfth century, a Latgalian wooden fortress was situated in the place where the castle ruins are now located. When the Latgalian fortress was destroyed is unknown. However in 1285, the Livonian Order built a two storey stone castle with towers in the same location. Until the sixteenth century, the castle served as a base of the local Livonian order landlord. It was also the main military support base for battles with Russians and Lithuanians. The castle was ravaged and rebuilt many times. When it was destroyed in the middle of seventeenth century it was not rebuilt. Today on the ancient castle hill some fragments of stone walls and basics can be seen.
